Joy Sprout Collective is a handwritten letter project about the small, everyday moments that make life worth living.
Plant a moment. Grow a movement.
What is Joy Sprout Collective?
Joy Sprout Collective is a handwritten letter project about the small, everyday moments that make life worth living. Not the big milestones, but the bits in between that make us laugh, lift us, or stay with us long after they've passed.
It started simply. I began writing handwritten letters to people I admired, asking them one question:
What small, everyday experience has brought you a moment of joy recently, and why?
Each letter goes out with a stamped addressed envelope to make replying as easy as possible, and a second envelope so the recipient can pass a little joy on to someone else if they choose.
Because there is something quietly radical about a handwritten letter in 2025. It says: I thought about you. I took time. You are worth a stamp.
But why joy?
When did you last feel genuine joy?
Not happiness. Not contentment. Joy.
Joy is different. Joy is childlike and expressive and completely carefree. It doesn't care about other people's opinions. It is about being authentic, being in the moment, being free. We tend to feel it easily when we're young, and then somewhere along the way, life gets in the way.
And we're not asking about the big life milestones. Not the wedding day, not the birth of a child. Those moments matter enormously, of course they do. But they're not universal. Not everyone will experience them. And if joy only lives in the big, landmark moments, then for some people, it starts to feel like something that belongs to other people's lives.
That's why Joy Sprout Collective focuses on the smaller stuff. The moments that are available to all of us, even when life is hard. A morning so still it feels like the world is holding its breath. The stomach-drop thrill of a rollercoaster. Reaching the top of a hill and just standing there. Some will be peaceful, some will be funny, some will be completely irreverent. But they all count. And they all have the potential to spark something for someone else.
Because that's the idea. Capture a moment. Grow a movement. Take the joy that people share with us and use it to inspire real experiences for people who need them most.
And here's the thing. In many parts of society today, joy isn't just forgotten. It's almost looked down on. As though being carefree is somehow irresponsible. As though expressing delight is something to be embarrassed about.
We disagree.
Joy Sprout Collective exists because we think joy is quietly radical. And we think that gathering small moments of it, nurturing them, and sharing them with people who really need them could be something genuinely powerful.
What are we building?
Joy Sprout Collective has a clear and ambitious journey ahead, and it starts small on purpose.
Right now, we're sending letters, gathering moments, and planting seeds. Each one goes out by hand, with a question, a stamped return envelope, and a second envelope to pass a little joy on.
As the responses come in, we want to find the threads that connect them. What if hundreds of people, from completely different walks of life, all find joy in the same unexpected thing? What if the patterns surprise us?
From there, the plan is to create an exhibition of letters (with the full consent of contributors) that celebrates those shared moments and invites the public to reflect on their own.
And then the really exciting part. Using what people tell us to create genuine joyful experiences for people who need them most. Imagine someone shares that their moment of joy was wild swimming at sunrise. What if we could make that happen for someone who's never had the chance? Someone facing loneliness, financial hardship, or struggling with their mental health. Because joy shouldn't be a luxury.
The long-term ambition is for Joy Sprout Collective to become a self-sustaining Community Interest Company or charity. A pay-it-forward model where moments of joy generate more moments of joy, rippling outward in ways we can't yet predict.
You might have received a letter...
If you've found your way here because a letter landed on your doormat, hello, and thank you for looking us up!
You don't have to do anything. But if a small moment of joy comes to mind, something that made you laugh, lifted you, or just stayed with you, I'd love to hear about it. Everything you need to reply is already in the envelope. A few lines is plenty.
And if you'd like to pass a little joy on, there's a second envelope in there too.
No pressure. No deadline. Just a small invitation.
Who is behind Joy Sprout Collective?
Hi, I'm Clare Meakin, the human behind Joy Sprout Collective.
By day I run my own evaluation consultancy, helping organisations understand the difference they make. It turns out that years of listening to people's experiences and finding the meaning in them is surprisingly good preparation for a handwritten letter project about joy. By evening I write handwritten letters to strangers and famous people in equal measure, with a fountain pen, getting covered in ink, and hand cramp.
I live in Cheshire with a fluffy ragdoll called Bella, who has no interest in the project but is a very good listener.

Where are we so far?
Joy Sprout Collective is brand new, and that's part of the story. So far, twelve letters have gone out: each one handwritten, each one asking the same simple question. Some have gone to people I admire from afar. Others to people closer to home. All of them sent with a stamp, a return envelope, and a bit of hope.
It's early days, and that's fine. Every big thing started with someone doing a small thing and meaning it.
Support the Project
Joy Sprout Collective runs entirely on goodwill, spare stamps, and optimism. But if you'd like to help it grow, even a small donation to our crowdfunder (click 'support' below) makes a real difference.
Donations go towards postage, materials, and keeping the project alive while we work towards Arts Council and other longer term funding.
Thank you for taking an interest in Joy Sprout Collective!
